How changing your view can reinvent your life
Day eight of my 30 Day Blog Challenge and today’s project is to maximise the use of photos in my blog. That got me thinking, where can I find some good ones? With a blinding flash (no pun intended) I realised I should tell you about my friend Andy Kyle and his fascinating website called The View From The Dartmouth Office, also known as www.tvftdo.com
Andy and his lovely wife Helen live in the beautiful riverside Devon town of Dartmouth. They work from home and their office overlooks the River Dart one of the most spectacular sights in the UK.
Andy is a photographer and takes pictures daily of the everyday life and events of the view from their office garden. He’s a busy man and he does this as well as running another business. Remarkably Andy’s The View From The Dartmouth Office pictures have been featured on seven different occasions in national newspapers. And this month the website was featured in a four page spread in Devon Life magazine.
Leaving their careers was a big leap for Andy and Helen. Andy had previously worked as a picture editor for national newspapers. Helen had also worked in the news industry. After leaving corporate life they set up their own company doing genealogy research from their home office in London. The view from this office was a depression-making wooden fence.
Their next big leap was to move to Dartmouth. In doing this they certainly have changed their view in many ways. They have made new friends, started new hobbies, escaped from corporate life, rediscovered themselves (they even got married!) and in Andy’s words it’s ‘given him a life’. Best of all Andy has rediscovered his love of photography, have a look at the site and I’m sure you’ll agree he has quite a talent for it. He also has a talent for writing great captions which adds to the character of this fascinating website.
Andy and Helen have changed their view and they haven’t looked back!
Could you change your view and change your life?

This stirs something in my soul Sue! And caused me to reflect on a few things including ‘changing the view’! Who would think that changing a view could have a massive impact? We go on holiday to change our view, be somewhere different and then accept thats the way it works – a temporary adjustment that refreshes us on our return home to the familiar.
Bob and I decided on a big location change a few years ago. For a while it was short visits to our house that sits on the River Dart (opposite Andy) but it got harder and harder to go ‘home’ this was beginning to feel like our home. We soon decided this was where we wanted to plant our roots and wholeheartedly went for it, not looking back once and not one single regret – which is amazing when you consider we lived in a beautiful house in the middle of the Peak District for 15 years. Loved it but knew there was a new life waiting for us.
The view has changed almost everything. Biggest factor is looking out on The River Dart every day and night, watching the river traffic, colourful and entertaining. Our sensitivity to changes in weather and seasons are greatly heightened as it seems it all gets reflected in the water. As a passionate photographer this has all been a revelation to me. When stressed I just pick up my camera and head off for a beach – whatever the weather.
Our sense of well being and peace has dramatically changed. We love living in our place and love the many experiences and associations we have with other likeminded people who live a ferry crossing away.
The view can change your life – by changing your outlook on life.
Carole, thanks so much for your wonderful comments. I am so pleased that my blog stirred something in you to reflect on the changes you and Bob have made to your lives. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have had great feedback on how my ‘junior’ blog is inspiring and motivating people to make changes in their lives. Your comment will add more inspiration to this. It’s inspiring me to keep writing, in fact I’m hooked! I love our visits to Dartmouth and I think if it had a golf course/driving range with easy access for David to do his teaching we could be very happy there. We will be visiting in a couple of weeks so hope we can see you both.
Sue
